A couple of days back on Friday, 3rd August, The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) honored India’s Footballing legend, Sunil Chhetri with the title ‘Asian Icon’ by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This was also the day Chettri was celebrating his birthday.
Popularly known as Captain Fantastic, in India, Chettri has scored an incredible 64 goals in 101 appearances for the Indian National Football Team, which makes him the country’s all-time top scorer.
In a throwback of Chhetri’s illustrious journey, the AFC wrote:
“It is no ordinary feat for a player to be the world’s third active highest scoring international footballer in the era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and for a player from Asia to be within one goal of Messi’s 65 goals for a national team is a record our latest inductee to the list of ‘Asian Icons’ list should be incredibly proud of.”
Making the day even more special for Chettri, The state body of football in Delhi, India celebrated his birthday as ‘Football Delhi Day’.
Sunil Chettri gained a lot of popularity due to his recent efforts, where he posted an emotional video on social media requesting all Indian Football fans to show their love and support for the national team and attend the four-nation Intercontinental Cup, which was organized in Mumbai. Chettri was really pleased with the response of the Indian football fans as they turned up in huge numbers, filling the entire stadium. It is was quite amazing to see how much can a single video posted by one man manage to influence so many people. If anything it just showed the love, fans in India had towards him.
On the auspicious occasion of his birthday, one of India’s greatest footballer couldn’t have asked for a better gift and he truly deserves the title of ‘Asian Icon’.
