Winx Is Eyeing a Record 30th Consecutive Win, the Most for an Australian Horse

With 29 consecutive wins, Winx is a champion mare that does not need to prove its mettle anymore. It has achieved almost everything a horse could. This is why it is now eyeing an unprecedented record for an Australian horse- 30 consecutive race wins, a dream which may come true as anxious racegoers and bettors hold their breath at Randwick.

While Winx holds a great record, she is still not able to come close to the records set by other horses before her. Puerto Rican horses have won more than her- Galgo Jnr won 39 races before losing, Condado won 4, Confresi won 49. The Hungarian mare Kincsem won 54 consecutive races. However, the world record for the most number of races won in a row is held by Puerto Rico’s Camarero which one 56 times.

Winx jockey High Bowman said that the champion mare has nothing to prove. Talking on SEN, he said that Winx may participate in spring and could eye a fifth Cox Plate as well. However, her next race is set for the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at 3:50 pm today at Randwick. This race could be a turning point in her career.

Bettors are backing her with all their might and TAB reported their highest bet on Winx at $1.08 with $250,000. Interestingly, the bettor is set to win just $20,000. The last biggest bet on TAB was $201,200 at $1.22 at Cox Plate last year. Winx usually brings huge bets, and one punter has reportedly put $150,000 on her at $1.10. Bookmakers have settled around a $1.09 odd for her winning the Randwick race.

Can Winx go down in history without winning her 30th race? She has won a record four Cox Plates, beating Kingston Town’s three. Her record of 29 consecutive race wins tops Black Caviar’s record by four. Winx has also won more money than any other horse in Australia, totaling $23 million. What makes her a great candidate for future races is that she has not shown any signs of a slowdown and has remained relatively free of injuries.

Her trainer Chris Wallet suggests that she can look after herself and doesn’t put herself under pressure in races. She doesn’t over race as well and takes a break after every 3 or 4 races. He also thinks that keeping her in Australia has also played a big part in her longevity.

During Saturday’s race, her first task will be to cover the 1400m distance, which poses the highest danger to her, according to Bowman. As Winx hasn’t raced since the Cox Plate, there could be an element of the unknown as well. However, he is confident that the mare is ready to go.
